It was such a pleasure to have Chika Anyanwu from Life Teen USA lead the youth leaders training and I can confidently say that I walked away from that session a different person!

One thing that stood out for me during the sessions was when Chika talked about humility. Chika quoted C.S. Lewis and said, “Humility isn’t thinking less of ourselves. It’s thinking of ourselves less.” Being part of the committee for Catholics at Curtin is challenging and sometimes we get frustrated when we don’t get the numbers we want because we have put in so much effort into it. However, we forget that it is not about what we wanted but rather what God wanted. When you are being a disciple of Christ to others, it isn’t about the numbers but it is about bringing Christ to them. The best thing about being a youth leader is when you have someone come up to you and say, “that session was great and I really needed it” or “my prayers were answered”. Even if we had three people show up, we’re still proud to say that we managed to reach three people that day.

During the session I thought to myself, I want to be just like Chika, she’s the kind of leader I want to be. However, Chika subsequently mentioned that “you want to live your life so that people will see God in you.” In that moment it clicked in my head that I didn’t just want to be like Chika, I wanted to be more like Jesus!

Another point I took home was that we can’t lead others where we ourselves are not willing to go. It is so important to frequently reflect on yourself by checking in on how you are doing. In the session, Chika made us sit in silence and reflect on how we were doing emotionally, physically, spiritually and intellectually. Everyone wants to show others their perfect side and we all know that we can’t be perfect all the time. None of us is perfect and that is why we need to always reconcile back to God. We don’t glorify sin, we glorify God.

In my opinion, the things that Chika shared are applicable to everyone, not just to youth leaders. Chika really showed the spirit of evangelisation that should be ignited in every single one of us as a witness to Christ.
