140 Year 11 students from Mater Dei College, Edgewater were treated to an energetic and animated session last 7th of August, by the CYM Team and volunteers. The team which consisted of two CYM staff (Eliza and Vincent), Sarah Leo from Whitfords Parish and Trevor Fernando from Lockridge Parish were tasked to inspire and encourage the students to reflect on making good decisions and choices in the secular society.
The session started with the ever popular game, “heads or tails” led by Trevor. This transitioned onto a fun teaching activity named Let’s Make a Deal, where various participants were given the task to pick a prize hidden underneath 3 boxes, a chair and behind the banner.
This was followed by an informative talk by Eliza on the topic of Freedom to choose, highlighting the life of an inspirational young man, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati plus touching on the questions of what is freedom, what is it for and what might help them to be freer.
A last minute and an inspired decision were to include a testimony in the program. Sarah Leo was given the task to share her story to the 140 students. All eyes and ears were on her as she shared about big and small decisions she has made and will be making. Her story of moving to Australia from Singapore and living in small community of girls at ECU Joondalup and faced with another big decision after she completes her course captured the interests of the audience.
Although only for an hour and a half, the session was truly spirit filled and the smiles on the faces of the students as they departed for their break gave us an indication that we had completed our task in inspiring the students to make good or better choices day to day.
