“Our faith calls us to protect God’s creation” – Youth Gather for Mass and environmental discussion
On Sunday 20th September young people from a number of different parishes gathered together for an Inter-parish Youth Mass at Our Lady of the Mission parish, Whitfords. Mass was followed by a meal and a discussion of Pope Francis’ ecological encyclical Laudato si.
Youth Leader Persia Walker described a “vibrant, prayerful, youth animated and youth oriented mass.” Before mass explained Persia, “youth were invited to light a candle for their personal intentions.” And during mass “youth participated in the choir and as readers and special ministers.” The event brought an extra 40-50 young people to the regular parish mass time, allowing young people from different parishes to worship together and witness to the rest of the parish the fervour of young Catholics.
After mass young people gathered in the Church hall where they got to know each other over a delicious Chinese meal. Once dinner was finished the youth choir led the group in praise and worship. This led into a talk from special guest speaker, Nigel Hayward from Catholic Earthcare Australia. Nigel spoke about Pope Francis’ latest encyclical Laudato Si where the Pope outlines our responsibility to care for creation. “The talk was a good reminder of small things we can do to reduce our personal impact on the environment” explains Persia, “It was enlightening to realise that our faith calls us to protect God’s creation.”
The next inter-parish youth mass is being hosted by St Mary’s Cathedral youth leaders on Sunday 18th October, youth from Parishes across Perth are invited to attend the 5:00 pm Mass followed by a social gathering and refreshments.
