We – the Youth & Young Adults of St Gerard Majella, Mirrabooka – have kick started 2014 with a few great community building events. Our most recent event – a Movie & Pizza night – was a huge success.
We gathered on a Friday evening during Lent to eat some delicious (meat-free!) pizza and watch the film Fireproof… A drama with a great sentiment – “you never leave your partner in the midst of a fire” – and that clearly expresses that, with the love of God in your life, you are free to love yourself and others more fully. For those who haven’t seen it, we highly recommend it. It will revolutionise your relationships, regardless of your age, gender or marital status.
We count the night as a HUGE success by the 30-40 people that came, their enthusiasm, and the wonderful sense of community that was experienced.
We are learning that different types of events in our Parish, will draw different crowds. And we are learning that as long as we are serving our Parish, it doesn’t matter what crowd turns up. There are many different things to learn from the variety of different cultures that make up our Parish, but the most uplifting of them all is family-like community. We are all-inclusive at St Gerard’s and welcoming of anyone and everyone.
We will most-likely hold sporadic movie nights in the future, but for now will be meeting fortnightly on Friday evenings for fellowship and spiritual development (and snacks!). Our Youth are aged roughly 12-18 and our Young Adults are aged roughly 18-35. At the moment, we are working on connecting with the large number of young people in our parish that are unaware of our ministry’s presence.
