In 1984 at the close of the Holy Year of Redemption, over 300,000 young people from around the world gathered for an International Jubilee of Youth on Palm Sunday at St Peter’s Square as a response to His Holiness John Paul II’s invitation. It was at this celebration that the late Holy Father entrusted the World Youth Day Cross to the young people to be carried throughout the world as a symbol of the love of Christ for Humanity.
In 1985 Palm Sunday, saw another mass gathering of young people in Rome coinciding with the United Nations International Year of the youth. The Holy Father saw this as an opportunity, and announced the institution of World youth Day (WYD) on the 20th of December, 1985. The first official World Youth Day was held in 1986 in Rome, and in 1987 the principal international World Youth Day was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Every Palm Sunday has been since designated as WYD, alternately celebrated at diocesan and international levels.
29 years after its conception, the Archdiocese is still taking a role in celebrating World Youth Day with its young people on Palm Sunday. The event started with a pilgrimage from the Catholic Youth Ministry office in Highgate, to Perth’s own St Mary’s Cathedral. The one hour walk took the young people on a journey of prayer, reflection and camaraderie.
On arrival at the Cathedral, the pilgrims gathered at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel for an inspirational message by Bishop Don Sproxton, highlighting the theme of this year’s World Youth Day, which was “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for there is the kingdom of Heaven.” The talk was followed by a moving testimony by WYD 2013 participant, Dylan Pearce, in which he shared about his experience of his pilgrimage to World Youth Day in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
To conclude the day, the young people were relocated to the Cathedral’s Parish centre for the WYD 2016 launch. They were treated to some delicious polish donuts and invited by the Director of CYM to the next international World Youth Day. The historic event will be held in the majestic city of Krakow, Poland from the 25th of July to the 31st of July 2016.
