Year of Youth Initiatives in Catholic Agencies

Year of Youth Initiatives – Discussion forum on how to engage more young people in Catholic Agencies

On the 8th of March 2018, Catholic Youth Ministry hosted a meeting between multiple Catholic agencies representatives and Christian Service Learning school staff across the Archdiocese of Perth. The event was attended by 19 people, with 12 representatives from agencies and 7 from schools.

The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC) have identified the liturgical year of 2018 as the national Year of Youth. The Year of Youth calls for the active engagement of the church with young people. As part of the Year of Youth initiative, this forum was held with the purpose of connecting catholic schools with agencies in giving the students a head start and getting them involved in active service within the different agencies available. The schools/agencies came together to brainstorm ideas on how the high school students (under 18s) can be involved on an on-going meaningful voluntary basis with the agencies.

Adeline, CYM’s Year of Youth Project Worker started by sharing about the Year of Youth, The Year of Youth Perth resource and her vision for the meeting in Opening New Horizon for Spreading Joy. It was followed by Mr John Richards, the Director of Christian Service Leaving from Aquinas College who has over 25 years of experience to share about his dreams in the corporal works of mercy for the students through Christian Service Learning in school. Mr Richard shared testimonies of the capabilities of the students in fulfilling the requirement of the task they are involved in and the positive impact it has on them. Anita Parker, Director of Catholic Youth Ministry shared that her experience engaging with under 18s and student volunteers was valuable in youth ministry.

Then it was followed by small group discussion between teachers & agencies in sharing their thoughts and exchanging contact details for future projects together. The session concluded in a positive note with keen interest from both schools & agencies to continue  the conservation started that evening.
