A big number of World Youth Day pilgrims gathered together for a youth Mass at Saint Anthony of Padua Parish in Wanneroo on Sunday 15th September. This was followed by free burgers and chips in the parish hall with fellowship and activities for the young people. It was great to see around 80 young people who are eager to carry on the message of Pope Francis by connecting to the youth of different parishes. Both priests in Wanneroo, Fr John Daly and Fr Thomas Zureich, went to WYD in Rio and were happy to have a packed church that Sunday night.
Fr John did a great job in entertaining the young people by playing a quiz game with them after the meal and generously giving out iTunes vouchers and other prizes to the winners.
This time the ceiling of the hall, which came off at the last parish youth event, remained stable. It was great to see a big number of the youth of Wanneroo mingling with the visiting youth who have had up to one hour car drive to get to this parish in the northern suburbs. The idea to have Mass, relates to the message of the Pope to have Christ in the centre by celebrating Mass together. At the same time the initiators like Andrew Devitt intended to have the opportunity to connect the youth every second month to different parishes that the fire of faith caught, can spread out. Pope Francis told the youth at the Rio WYD “You have met Jesus with others. But you shouldn’t lock this experience and encounter away, for this is like withholding oxygen from a flame. You should pass on the flame of faith”.
There are now plans to continue gathering young people together throughout the Archdiocese.
