Fun Parish Soccer and Netball at St Helena of the Cross Parish in Ellenbrook

Eight Parish Soccer Teams and Two Parish Netball Teams gathered in the beautiful grounds of Holy Cross College, Ellenbrook as part of the Inaugural St Helena of the Holy Cross Parish Soccer and Netball Carnival.

The day begun with prayer with Fr Francis Nguyen and Parish Priest Fr Bona who then called upon Emeritus Archbishop Hickey and local MP Mr Frank Alban to open the competition with the Official Kick-off.

In a relaxed atmosphere, over 80 competitors and an equally fantastic group of Parish Supporters with Mums, Dads, siblings and Grand-parents spent Saturday 22nd October relaxing and enjoying a day of sport and also eating a lovely Parish BBQ.

A number of competitors commented on the chance to not only play sport but also to meet fellow Catholics. John, a member of Holy Cross College and the local Catholic Youth Group that meets every first and third Sunday nights after 5.45pm Mass in St Helena of the Holy Cross Ellenbrook, commented that it was a ‘Happy fun day and the football was of a high standard and I had fun with my mates’.

The presentation at the end of the day resulted in Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Girrawheen carrying away the Netball Trophy by defeating St Helena of the Cross, Ellenbrook and The Seminarians from Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Morley winning a spirited Soccer Grand Final against Our Lady of the Mission in Whitfords.

Overall it was a truly enjoyable day for all involved and as our Parish Priest Fr Bona said, “It was a special day for Evangelisation” in our Parish.

John Topliss is Parish Chairperson at St Helena of the Holy Cross Parish in Ellenbrook.
