“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” – 1 Timothy 4:12
This was the main theme of the Soul Power Retreat held last January 18 -20 at scenic Eagles Nest Retreat Centre, where close to 20 young people from Girrawheen Parish attended a weekend of fun, faith and leadership training.
Youth leaders from Soul Power conducted sessions focusing on the Love of God and Who is Jesus Christ? With the aim of challenging the participants to embrace their faith and know Jesus on a personal level.
Catholic Youth Ministry staff also assisted by running a Leadership session, highlighting the need for young people to ‘be more and be great in all that they do’, to harness their gifts and potential but most importantly, to look to Jesus as a role model for leadership.
The participants also partook in a friendly competition of Amazing Race, tackling many difficult obstacles and mind-bending games. The purpose of these activities were to encourage the young people to work as a team while practicing various leadership abilities.
The highpoint of the retreat was the Eucharistic Adoration with Fr Peter Whitley, Archdiocesan Vicar General. He led the young people into solemn prayer and invited them to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It was a delight to witness young people line up to receive confession ready for a new and transformed heart. It was an evening of emotions, healing and joy.
Soul Power youth member, Samantha Samuels was grateful for her experience at the retreat as it had taught her a lot about herself and most especially the love of God. “I attended the retreat with my youth group and I had truly learnt the true meaning of God’s love. Although I was reluctant to go, I ended up going home with the presence of God back in my life.” said Samantha.
