During the first Post ACYF event, Catholic Youth Ministry (CYM) Perth launched the ‘Bring a friend’ campaign at Newman Siena Centre last Saturday 29th February. Adeline Bock, Director of Catholic Youth Minister Perth, encouraged some 150+ young people, whose lives were transformed during ACYF, to join in the mission of youth ministry in Perth to reach out to other young people being on mission for Christ.
Adeline spoke about the importance of young people being on a mission, quoting Pope Francis: “Evangelisation is the mission of the Church, not just of a few, but my, your, our mission”.
She said, “It can sometimes be easy for us to sit back and let others do it. But this is not what we are called to do. In the hearts of young people, there is an inherent desire to change the world. This desire is great if directed to the right cause.”
As Emeritus Pope Benedict said, “You are made for greatness, not comfort”. Young people are called to bring zest and passion for Christ out to others by being a witness for Christ. However, being a witness is the first step of evangelisation, and we should also be actively inviting others to meet the person of Jesus and be open to journeying with others because we are all in this together.
Adeline shared that there are two folds in our mission. The first is to look into our inner room; where our mission is to grow our love for Christ. When we are in love with someone, we will want to spend time with them, share our joy & suffering with them. God wants this with us as well. Adeline encouraged the young people to get to know Christ by spending more time in prayer and letting God affirm them for who they are- beloved sons & daughters of God.
The second part of the mission is to reach out to others around us. To put this into perspective, we are inviting others to come onto the lifeboat of eternal life after death with God. It may be daunting to extend an invite. Quoting St Francis Xavier, “When trying to evangelise, no tool is more effective, than that of personal witness. People can argue with points of doctrine, but no-one can argue with a personal testimony!”
Adeline challenged the crowd with a question “If you have encountered Christ, will you share this with those around you?”
Finally, each person was invited to think of three people they are planning to reach out to this year. It was followed by praying for these three people and then by a call to action – to be active in cooperation with God in journeying and inviting others to encounter Christ.
“It could be a youth event or to your youth groups & parishes,” Adeline encouraged young people to keep each other accountable and to celebrate progress as every small step counts!
Adeline concluded by quoting St Mother Theresa of Calcutta, “God doesn’t require us to succeed; He only requires that you try”.
Throughout 2020, the CYM team will be committed to being on a mission to evangelise young people and invite others to do the same- joining forces for the greater mission of bringing more young people to encounter Christ.
