Living the Faith Series is a collection of stories of faith from the youth of the Archdiocese of Perth.
My name is Christina Nguyen, I’m a nineteen-year-old youth leader with the Vietnamese Catholic Youth Ministry, and I was born and raised in Perth, Western Australia.
My first Australian Catholic Youth Festival was in Sydney (2017) and initially… I didn’t want to attend. It took a lot of convincing, but with the help of family and friends, I finally caved in and it has forever changed my life.
Before ACYF, I never felt a connection to my faith. I would attend mass and pray every Week, but If I’m being honest, it just felt like I was doing those things for the sake of it.
However, ACYF helped me reconnect with my faith. The feeling I had as soon as I walked into the arena on the first day was indescribable. Being surrounded, in a room, with so many like-minded young people gave me a sense of belonging.
The whole experience was incredible. From attending a variety of sessions on different topics, to listening to the sound of Matt Maher and Fr. Rob was an experience I will never forget.
I got to relive those special moments last year. Months leading up to the event our youth group was asked to perform the ‘Knock of Faith’ on the Summer Garden Stage. To say the least, it was a very stressful yet rewarding few months; and I’m so glad we did it.
Life after ACYF has brought me so much happiness, it has made me a stronger and more confident youth leader. I joined the Catechesis program early last year and was able to learn so much on so many different topics. I want to continue to support the youth; to help them realise that they’re not alone on their faith journey.
I want to encourage more young people to attend the next ACYF, as it is an experience that will forever be close to my heart; an experience that has taught me so much about myself and about my faith.
