Local initiatives prepare for Year of Youth Launch
To prepare for the Year of Youth, Catholic Youth Ministry has organised regional networking meetings around Perth. Each meeting was broken up into different zones consisting of the Central, Fremantle, Northern, Claremont, Queens Park, Guildford, Canning and Rural (Kalgoorlie, Avon, and Merredin) Zones.
The first regional meetings focused on finding simple ways to encourage young people to participate actively in the liturgy and host a launch Mass for the Year of Youth on the weekend of the 3rd of December 2017, which marks the commencement of the new liturgical year.
The purpose of the meeting primarily was to inform different parishes, schools, and communities about the commencement of the Year of Youth 2018 and to participate in the joy of bringing the young people (12-30 years old) back to the Church. As one Catholic community, all of us are called to be part of a vital mission – drawing young people closer to Christ, and we can only do this if all of us work together as one Church. At the launch Mass in December, a blessing will be given to the young people to welcome and acknowledge the importance of their presence in the Church.
Each parish is encouraged to create a Year of Youth Action Team and/or nominate a Year of Youth Ambassador. This action team should be made up of a variety of adults and young people in your community to prepare activities for the Year of Youth (e.g. older parishioners, teachers, parents, young people, and a Safeguarding Officer).
Some of the ideas for the Year of Youth Launch Mass that were suggested are:
– Encourage students to participate in music at Mass at their parish
– Ask young people proclaim the readings at Mass or to bring up the procession of gifts
– Gather different youth groups from different parishes and have a youth night rally
– Invite parents, grandparents and young people for fellowship after Mass
– Host a games night and free sausage sizzle after launch Mass
Our goal is that through these networking nights, each zone can build a strong relationship with each other and work together to spread the joy of putting Christ at the center of our lives. The nights bring together nearby schools, parishes and families in a way of shared mission to support our young people. Through the work that we do and the joy that we have, we can draw more young people back to Christ.
