On the 10th of February 2019, the Perth Chinese Catholic Community celebrated Chinese New Year at Manning Parish. Auxiliary Bishop of Perth, Don Sproxton, along with Father Patrick Lim, Rev Mgr Michael Keating, Rev Mgr Tim Corcoran, as well as Rev Fr Greg Carroll celebrated mass with and took part in the celebrations.
At the conclusion of the mass, Bishop Don and the priests exchanged red packets with the children, while the children wished the bishop and priests good health and a prosperous new year. The giving of red packets is customary, as it represents sending the other person happiness, good energy and good luck. It is a way to wish the recipient a safe and peaceful year.
During the post-mass celebration, the congregation gathered outside to witness a lion dance, which is a performance believed to bring prosperity and good luck for the upcoming year. The lion represents power, wisdom and superiority. It is often a part of festivals or big occasions to bring good fortune and most importantly to chase away evil spirits. It was an energetic and uplifting performance as you can see the crowd with smiles on their faces.
A highlight of any celebration is the food, and this event did not disappoint. People gathered in the parish hall for a delicious lunch, full of incredible tradition Chinese dishes such as sweet and sour pork, fried tofu, chicken curry, as well as a mountainous amount of rice. There were also many exciting performances such as people singing traditional Chinese New Year songs which gave a great atmosphere to the day.
Finally, the day concluded with the much-anticipated raffle draw, which saw many great prizes being won by the delighted winners.
