Living the Faith Series is a collection of faith stories from the young people of the Archdiocese of Perth.
Hi! I’m Hansel, and I’m 17 years old. I am studying Sports Exercise Science at Murdoch University, and I am a member of the Santa Clara Youth Group in Bentley.
My life before ACYF, to be frank, was already kind of fulfilling. My parents have always encouraged me to participate in church and youth group activities as well as myself, ensuring to be engaged with my faith towards God. Last year in 2019, I went with my Parish Youth Group to the Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF) 2019, which changed my life.
I want to thank Fr Rob Galea, who made sure I cried in our praise to God realising all the good work He has done for me. When Fr Rob sang Lord I need you; at that moment it just clicked. When I closed my eyes and sensed the powerful atmosphere, I felt the tears coming down your eyes. At this moment, I was reminded that God shows us everlasting love and compassion.
After ACYF, my most significant transformation would be making a commitment to spend more time in prayer. I started doing the rosary more frequently, especially during my holidays in Indonesia recently. I’m always reminded that wherever you go, always pray to the Holy Family of Nazareth. Even when you’re having the best time of your life, that’s when you must stop and make the Sign of the Cross to say, “Thank you, Lord”.
In addition to this, whenever I have the time and chance, I would go to Confession and Adoration. For example, throughout my 2 weeks trip, I have prayed in 5 different churches, and I have found the Adoration room in each church. As I move forward in my faith journey, I will continue to praise God and believe in Him. Whatever I do, I will do in the name of God. I think everything can be done through Him no matter the obstacle in life. Maybe I will become an Acolyte, but most importantly, I will praise God’s name forever. Amen
