Living the Faith Series is a collection of stories of faith from the youth of the Archdiocese of Perth.
Born and bred in a Catholic family
My name is Cheryl, and I’m a nineteen-year-old living in Perth.
Being born and bred in a Catholic family and community, I had always been sheltered with the same viewpoints. So, when I first ventured out to Christian Youths, I began to realise that there was still so much more to learn about my faith. Even though I had been brought up with it, I, myself thought that I knew a lot about the Catholic faith.
What motivated me to join ACYF
But when asked questions on history and aspects of Catholicism, I didn’t know how to answer to them out of fear of giving the wrong answer or depicting Catholic youths as ignorant. Hence, what motivated me to join the Australian Catholic Youth Festival was wanting to strengthen my faith and dive deeper into my relationship with God.
Going to each of the speaker’s testimonies, watching them freely and pridefully proclaim the gospel and their encounters with Christ, not only armed me with the information I needed but, it taught me to be bold with my decisions and my faith. My interactions with other Catholic youths who weren’t afraid to bare their Catholic selves via reciting psalms and singing songs further prodded on my shy beliefs.
Discover more about my faith
ACYF enabled me to really discover more about my faith and God’s relationship with us. Not only did it reinvigorate my beliefs, I met and grew with other Catholic youths who I am sure will motivate and encourage me on my faith journey. Every journey, whether we like it or not, will test our strength, our will and our resolve. It is up to us whether we can stand strong in the face of doubt.
Moving on, I hope that I too can be that initial spark of desire for others to learn more about the Catholic faith; just as ACYF ignited mine.
