5 Remedies for Ministry Burnout

by Matt Lim

As a youth leader, we can experience burnouts if we don’t look out for ourselves. Here are 5 remedies to get you back on track!

1. Create realistic boundaries

It is important for you to give yourself some down time and relax. Schedule time off and learn how to say “no”. Offer the things that we have to let go to God.

2. Seek accountability from a few friends

Even if this means talking with a friend 1,000 kilometres away that you met a conference and who understands what it is like. Take the time to invest in these relationships, because there aren’t a lot of others who can value what it takes to do what you do.

3. Prioritize your health

Stay away from all the free fast food that is offered at Church events (pizza, pasta, snacks, etc). Set and keep a good exercise routine. Finally, get more sleep. Make yourself go to bed at an earlier time if you have to.

4. Identify & acknowledge the issue

Remember your ‘Why’. Why do you do what you do? If that still doesn’t revitalise your passion, then don’t make any major changes until you are in a consolation and have sought good counsel from others.

5. Prayer is key!

Prayer should be your top priority when doing Youth Ministry. Once you drop prayer, you will find yourself losing direction and drive. Furthermore, dive deep into the Sacramental life, but do so with the intention of not just going through the motions
