Living the Faith – John Kelly

I was born and raised a cradle-Catholic: Mass every Sunday, strong Catholic education, daily prayer etc. I guess when you are little you take your whole surroundings for granted and I definitely assumed that my little Catholic ecosystem was all there was. School, teenage years and the massively changing socio-cultural landscape of the past 2 decades in Australia completely rattled all that. To make sense of it all, I began asking a lot of questions. And they were deep questions.

Is it all actually true? Does God exist? Is Scripture reliable? Is the Catholic Church the true extension of what it teaches? It didn’t stop there, because I knew that having a certain value-system is useless if it can’t be applied to the tough realities of life. Like how does my faith apply to the tragic death of a loved one? What about serious inequalities in the world? What about free will?

I don’t think I will ever stop questioning or ever stop trying to learn. So far, having strong mentors, reliable peers and a devotion to Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassatti has been invaluable on the journey as a young Catholic, helping me try to live life to the full (John 10:10).
