by Matt Lim
10 years ago, the podcasting world was pretty much unheard of. It could have been because it was a relatively new concept, internet on our mobile devices were limited to less than a gigabyte and it was the time when we weren’t all glued to our phones/iPads.
This made it quite difficult to thrive in the podcasting world. Fast forward 10 years, and there are people talking about literally anything you can think of.
To be completely honest, the majority of podcasts don’t interest me, however, there are a select few that have been an influential part of my reversion to the faith.
Here are my top 10 favourite podcasts in 2020 in no particular order.
St Thomas Aquinas was, and probably still is, one of the greatest philosophers to have been gifted to the church. Matt Fradd, is an Australian, who pondered what it would be like to have a conversation with this 13th century Saint. Every week, he invites the listener to explore fascinating topics with engaging guests.
Ave Explores is an initiative created to help people explore aspects of the Catholic faith from a variety of different angles, helping them take a look at topics that are relevant to their daily spiritual life in a fresh, engaging, and practical way. Hosted by Katie Prejean McGrady, a keynote speaker from ACYF 2019, Ave Explores aims to nourish the faith of everyday Catholics in ways that make a difference to everyday life. The podcast is broken up into series to provided targeted content.
The Counsel of Trent – https://www.trenthorn.com/podcast/
The Counsel of Trent is Trent Horn’s weekly podcast where he helps Catholics answer the toughest objections against our faith.
Every episode of The Counsel of Trent provides listeners with a “conversation roadmap” that will help them share their Catholic faith with anyone. They contain entertaining, informative, and practical explanations of the Faith as well as interviews with the best Catholic writers and speakers in the world today.
Let Love Podcast – https://sistersoflife.org/let-love-podcast/
Hosted by Sisters of Life Sr Marie Veritas and Sr Agnus Dei, Let Love podcast, invites us to join in for casual conversations, looking at life through the lens of love. God is Love. “Let Love” is about giving God permission in your life, letting go, and receiving the Love that frees you to live in the truth of who you are. If you have not heard of the Sisters of Life, get on to it! In my opinion, they are one of the fastest growing religious communities out there. As a bonus, you will end up learning about their friendly struggle with their favourite squirrel.
Poco a Poco Podcast – @cfr_franciscans – https://www.franciscanfriars.com/poco-a-poco-podcast
Fr Mark-Mary, Fr Innocent and Fr Angelus are Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, who release weekly podcasts. The Poco a Poco Podcast offers “Practical Spirituality.” The friars break open the Gospel in light of their years of prayer, communal life, and work with the poor.
This has got to be my favourite podcast this year. Once you start, you will quickly be hooked and waiting for each episode to be released. Not only is this fun to listen to, but each episode they really challenge you to have that deeper relationship with God.
Abiding Together is a weekly podcast hosted by Michelle Benzinger, Sr. Miriam James Heidland, and Heather Khym, providing a place of connection, rest and encouragement for people who are on the journey of living out their passion and purpose in Jesus Christ. In short, these ladies know how to keep it real.
Mary’s Podcast – https://www.truefaith.tv/podcast
I have followed Gabriel Castillo for quite some years and not only has he produced some solid content about the faith, he has done it in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. In 2020 Gabriel started a podcast dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and unpacks the reasons why everyone should entrust their whole life to her. Check out his Youtube channel for great solid Catholic content you can use for evangelisation and education purposes. Highly recommended!
The Liturgy Guys – https://www.liturgyguys.com/
For all those who geek out over liturgy, this is the podcast for you. The Liturgy Guys is an initiative of the Liturgical Institute, where the hosts gather every week to talk about Catholic Liturgy. The goal of this podcast is to share the treasures of Liturgy with English speaking Catholics all over the world. Don’t let the title of the podcast intimidate you. Each episode is presented in a way that anyone is able to understand the topic.
Over the years of listening to Catholic podcasts, this has got to be the show that I have spent most of my listening hours on. This is a daily show that is hosted by Cy Kellett that is a two-hour radio program dedicated to Catholic apologetics and evangelization. If you have any question about the faith, I’m almost certain you will be able to get the answers from here. You are even able to call in if you have a question yourself.
This is a relatively new initiative from the Catholic Answers team, where they focus on particular aspects of the faith. Unlike Catholic Answers Live, they are able to spend more time to dig deeper into the answers people have trouble with when defending the faith.
Lust is Boring is hosted by Jason Evert, a bestselling author of more than fifteen books, including The Dating Blueprint and How to Find Your Soulmate Without Losing Your Soul. Jason is probably the go-to guy when it comes to learning about topics such as the church’s teaching on chastity, pornography, homosexuality, Catholic dating etc.
