Weekly Reflection by Catholic Youth Ministry Staff

True Greatness

by Adeline

At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. – Matthew 18:1-14

When I was a child, I often wished to grow up quickly so that I could have the freedom to do what I wanted. Whenever I look at this bible passage, I used to often see that as a weakness. As if, we want to be told by an ‘adult’ of what you should do or shouldn’t do. Or is it because you can’t own up to your own decision?

As I grew older, I discovered the beauty of being little. There is so much freedom there. When you look at a child, they seem to have total faith & trust in their parents. A friend once shared with me, that he & his kids used to play ‘jump and catch’- where they would climb up a chair, announce that they will be jumping off, and expect him to catch them. On one occasion my friend wasn’t paying attention and when he came to his sense, his daughter was already midway falling towards the ground. In that split second, he dove in to save his daughter without thinking twice! This is precisely what God, our Heavenly Father, would do for us. We are called to be child-like in our faith so that we may rely on Him totally & fully. There is great freedom in letting go of what is beyond our control and knowing that our Heavenly Father has all things under His control. He is the Father who doesn’t just check in on us from time to time, but he is always there; ready to dive in for us when we fall and dance with us when we are happy!

I invite you to take some time this week to reflect:

  1. Has there been a time in my life that I have felt God’s presence strongly through my child-like faith?
  2. Is there any area in my life now that the Lord is calling me to have child-like faith and totally abandon myself to Him?
  3. In your prayer, make an active surrender to the Lord and ask him to guide you on what to do next.
  4. Once you have taken it into prayer, take courage and step out in faith!
