Youth Leaders Commissioned by the Bishop

“Remember that CYM is here to help you with your youth ministry. Keep their phone numbers close to you”, this was the concluding message of Bishop Don Sproxton to all youth leaders who were in attendance at the annual Youth Leaders Commissioning Mass scheduled last night, the 29th of January. The event was held at the chapel of the Catholic Pastoral Centre, home of the Catholic Youth Ministry team.

Attended by close to 60 youth leaders, adult mentors and friends, the Mass was designed for the Bishop to give a blessing, and to commission the young people in their role as youth leaders in the Archdiocese. It was also an opportunity to reassure them of the support and training provided by the Catholic Youth Ministry Team throughout their youth ministry journey.

Bishop Don during his homily stated, that the youth leaders should not overwhelm themselves with grand plans, but to embrace Pope Francis’ message of making plans both realistic and manageable. This was a wise counsel by the Auxiliary Bishop of Perth relevant especially to the new leaders present at the event.

The Mass was followed shortly by a short address by the Director of CYM, Anita Parker, in which she introduced two new members of the CYM Team Fr Mark Payton from Bateman Parish (Part-time Chaplain) and Eliza McKay (Full-time Youth Ministry Worker), plus launching fresh and exciting programs and events to jumpstart youth ministry in Perth this 2014.

The evening concluded with a sharing of the meal, joined with some laughter and conversations amongst the CYM team and the youth leaders. But it was a night many will remember that created a ripple of hope and passion for youth ministry in the Archdiocese of Perth.
